Xavier Patricio Pérez Álvarez (Buenos Aires 1951 - Caldes de Montbui 1990), conegut artísticament com Gato Pérez fou un music d'origen argentí establert a Catalunya, que destacà especialment en el gènere musical de la rumba catalana

Va arribar a Barcelona l'any 1966 amb la seva mare per unir-se al pare que havia fet el viatge abans. Estudià en el Col·legi Pare Manyanet i després a l'Institut Menéndez y Pelayo. Acabat el batxillerat s'establí durant un temps a Londres amb l'objectiu d'entrar a treballar en alguna discogràfica però no va tenir sort i va tornar a Barcelona.

El 1977 comença a experimentar amb la rumba catalana i posteriorment llençarà al carrer els seus dos primers àlbums Carabruta i Romesco al que seguirà un altre de més comercialAtalaya.

L'any 1981 Gato Pérez pateix un infart, comença a tenir greus problemes de salut i la fatiga produïda pels seus problemes cardíacs l'obliga a deixar l'alcohol. Treu al mercat dos àlbums més Prohibido maltratar a los gatos i Flaires de Barcelunya, aquest últim íntegrament en català.

Els seus problemes de salut no l'abandonaran fins a la seva mort l'any 1990.

Xavier Patricio Pérez Álvarez (11 de Abril, Buenos Aires, 1951 - Caldes de Montbui, Barcelona, 18 de octubre de 1990), conocido artísticamente como Gato Pérez fue un músico de origen argentino establecido en Cataluña, que destacó especialmente en el género musical de la rumba catalana.

Llegó a Barcelona en 1966 con su madre para unirse al padre que había hecho el viaje antes. Acabado el bachillerato se estableció un tiempo en Londres, con el objetivo de entrar a trabajar en alguna discográfica pero no tuvo suerte y volvió en Barcelona.

En 1977 empieza a experimentar con la rumba catalana y posteriormente publica sus dos primeros álbumes (Carabruta y Romesco), a los que que seguirá el más comercial Atalaya.

En 1981 Gato Pérez padece un infarto, empieza a tener graves problemas de salud y la fatiga producida por sus problemas cardíacos lo obliga a dejar el alcohol. Sus siguientes álbumes los saca, según sus propias palabras 'bajo los efectos del agua mineral'.

Gato Pérez ha sido reconocido como el renovador de la rumba catalana, precisamente en unos momentos en que pasaba por sus horas más bajas, debido a la pujanza de la muy dinámica movida madrileña. Destacan especialmente la calidad de sus letras y la fusión que logra entre la rumba y otras músicas populares contemporáneas, como el rock, o incluso el bolero.

Sus problemas de salud no lo abandonarán hasta su muerte, víctima de un infarto de miocardio, el año 1990. Posteriormente, su figura ha sido objeto de numerosos homenajes por parte de la profesión musical. Ventura Pons, que ya contó con Gato Pérez para la banda sonora de su película La rubia del bar, ha dirigido un documental acerca de su vida, titulado El gran Gato.

Aram Ilyich Khachaturian was born in Tiflis, Imperial Russia (now Tbilisi, Georgia) to a poor Armenian family. In his youth, he was fascinated by the music he heard around him, but at first he did not study music or learn to read it.
In 1920, when Armenia was declared a Soviet republic, Khachaturian joined a propaganda train touring Armenia, populated by Georgian-Armenian artists. The following year he travelled to Moscow to join his brother, the stage director of the Second Moscow Art Theatre. Although he had almost no musical education, Khachaturian showed such great talent that he was admitted to the Gnessin Institute where he studied cello under Sergey Bychkov, and later Andrey Borysyak. In 1925 Mikhail Gnessin started a composition class at the Gnessin Institute which Khachaturian joined.
In 1929, he transferred to the Moscow Conservatory where he studied under Nikolai Myaskovsky (composition) and Sergei Vasilenko (orchestration), graduating in 1934. In the 1930s, he married the composer Nina Makarova, a fellow student from Myaskovsky’s class. In 1951, he became professor at the Gnessin State Musical and Pedagogical Institute (Moscow) and the Moscow Conservatory. He also held important posts at the Composers' Union, becoming deputy chairman of the Moscow branch in 1937, then appointed vice-chairman of the Organizing Committee of Soviet Composers in 1939. In 1939 he composed his ballet Happiness, which was later reworked into the ballet Gayane.

The composer joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1943. However, he temporarily fell from official favour in 1948. It was the Symphonic Poem, later titled the Third Symphony, that officially earned Khachaturian the wrath of the Party. Ironically, Khachaturian wrote the work as a tribute to communism: “I wanted to write the kind of composition in which the public would feel my unwritten program without an announcement. I wanted this work to express the Soviet people’s joy and pride in their great and mighty country.” Perhaps because Khachaturian did not include a dedication or program notes, his intentions backfired.
Andrei Zhdanov, secretary of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, delivered the so-called Zhdanov decree in 1948. The decree condemned Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturian, and other Soviet composers as “formalist” and “anti-popular.” The three named composers had by then already become established as the so-called "titans" of Soviet music, enjoying worldwide reputation as some of the leading composers of the 20th century. Nonetheless, all three accused composers were forced to apologize publicly.
The decree affected Khachaturian profoundly: “Those were tragic days for me... I was clouted on the head so unjustly. My repenting speech at the First Congress was insincere. I was crushed, destroyed. I seriously considered changing professions.”
Despite this mortifying episode, Khachaturian returned to official favour. He received numerous state awards both before and after the Zhdanov decree: for example, four Stalin prizes (1941, 1943, 1946 and 1950), one Lenin prize (1959), a USSR State Prize (1971), and the title of Hero of Socialist Labor (1973). Khachaturian went on to serve again as Secretary of the Board of the Composers' Union, starting in 1957, and was also a deputy in the fifth Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (1958–1962).
Khachaturian died in Moscow on May 1, 1978, just short of his 75th birthday. He was buried in Yerevan, Armenia, along with other distinguished Armenians who made Armenian art accessible for the whole world. In 1998, he was honored by appearing on Armenian paper money (50 dram).
Music

Khachaturian's works include concertos for violin (sometimes heard in a composer-sanctioned arrangement for flute), cello and piano as well as concerto-rhapsodies for the same instruments. These three concertos were written for the members of a renowned Soviet piano trio that performed together from 1941 until 1963: David Oistrakh, violin; Sviatoslav Knushevitsky, cello; Lev Oborin, piano. The piano concerto originally included an early part for the flexatone, and was his first work to gain him recognition in the West. Khachaturians's three symphonies are varied works, with the third containing parts for fifteen additional trumpets and organ. The composer's largest scaled works are the ballets Spartacus and Gayane, both of which contain Khachaturian's most well-known music, with Gayane featuring in its final act what is easily his most famous music, the "Sabre Dance".
He also wrote several solo piano works, including the Toccata in E-flat minor, and two albums of music for children (Opp. 62 and 100). Children's Album, Book 1, first published in 1947, contains a smooth and melodic Andantino originally composed in 1926; this piece is commonly known as Ivan Sings, which stems from eight of ten pieces originally being collected as Adventures of Ivan. Children's Album, Book 2, first published in 1964, includes a fugue composed in 1928, and a fast-paced programmatic piece entitled Two Funny Aunties Argued which is sometimes translated as Two Ladies Gossiping. He also composed some film music and incidental music for plays such as the 1941 production of Mikhail Lermontov’s Masquerade, the orchestral suite of which has become relatively popular.
The cinematic quality of his music for Spartacus was clearly seen when the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia was used as the theme for a popular BBC drama series, The Onedin Line, during the 1970s. Since then, it has become one of the most popular of all classical pieces for UK audiences. Joel Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy also prominently featured music from Spartacus and Gayane (the "Sabre Dance" included). Gayane's adagio was used in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey among other films. He was also the composer for the state anthem of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, whose tune is one of the five current choices to become the next state anthem of Armenia. The climax of Spartacus was also used in Caligula (film) and Ice Age: The Meltdown.

Legacy and influence

Aram Khachaturian has been an iconic figure for generations of Armenian composers. His works paved the way for new styles and daring explorations, although his own style was closely controlled by the regime. Khachaturian encouraged young composers to experiment with new sounds and find their own voices. His colorful orchestration technique, admired by Shostakovich and others in the past, is still noted for its freshness and vitality by modern composers. Khachaturian's influence can be traced in nearly all trends of Armenian classical traditions, whether in symphonic or chamber music.

As a conductor, Khachaturian made several commercial recordings, including a 1953 recording of his second symphony with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, a 1963 recording of the symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and EMI recordings of suites from Gayane and Masquerade and his violin concerto in 1954 (with David Oistrakh as soloist) with the Philharmonia Orchestra. He later made stereo recordings of the violin concerto (again with Oistrakh), the second symphony in 1977 on the Russian Disc label, and music from Gayane. Some of his recordings have been reissued on CD.

Aram Khachaturian (June 6, 1903–May 1, 1978) was a Soviet-Armenian composer whose works were often influenced by Armenian folk music.[ Listen to a famous tune we all know 'Sabre Dance' composed by Aram Khachaturian]. He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Imperial Russia to a poor Armenian family.

In his youth, he was fascinated by the music he heard around him, but at first he did not study music or learn to read it. In 1921, he travelled to Moscow to join his brother, unable to speak a word of Russian. Although he had almost no musical education, Khachaturian showed such great talent that he was admitted to the Gnessin Institute where he studied cello under Mikhail Gnessin and entered a composition class (1925).

In 1929, he transferred to the Moscow Conservatory where he studied under Nikolai Myaskovsky. In the 1930s, he married the composer Nina Makarova, a fellow student from Myaskovsky’s class. In 1951, he became professor at the Gnessin State Musical and Pedagogical Institute (Moscow) and the Moscow Conservatory. He also held important posts at the Composers’ Union, which would later severely denounce some of his works as being “formalist” music, along with those of Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. These three composers became the so called “titans” of Soviet music, enjoying world-wide reputation as some of the leading composers of the 20th century.

Khachaturian’s works include concertos for violin (also transcribed for flute), cello, and piano (the latter originally including an early part for the flexatone), concerto-rhapsodies for the same instruments, three symphonies—the third containing parts for fifteen additional trumpets and organ, and the ballets Spartak (AKA Spartacus) and Gayane (music of which was used in Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey). The latter ballet features in its final act what is probably hismost famous movement, the "Sabre Dance.

The "Sabre Dance" is a movement in the final act of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane, completed in 1942. It evokes a whirling war dance in an Armenian dance, where the dancers display their skill with sabres.

Due to its exceptionally exciting rhythm, the Sabre Dance established a place for itself in common concert practice, leading also to various adaptations in popular music. In its middle section it uses an Armenian folk song from Gyumri, Armenia.

He also composed some film music and incidental music for plays such as the 1941 production of Mikhail Lermontov’s Masquerade. The cinematic quality of his music for Spartacus was clearly seen when it was used as the theme for a popular BBC drama series, The Onedin Line, during the 1970s. Since then, it has become one of the most popular of all classical pieces for UK audiences. Joel Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy also prominently featured music from Spartacus and Gayane (Sabre Dance included) mixed with the original compositions by Carter Burwell. He was also the composer for the state anthem of the Armenian SSR, whose tune is one of the five current choices to become the next state anthem of Armenia. The climax of Spartacus’ second movement was also used in Ice Age: The Meltdown.

The Balanescu Quartet is an avant-garde string quartet founded in 1987 by Alexander Bălănescu
that achieved fame through the release of several complex cover versions of songs by German
experimental electronic music band Kraftwerk on their album "Possessed".
The driving force behind the quartet has always been main composer and founder Alexander
Bălănescu. Clare Connors, violin, has also played a great part.

The quartet are mainly notable for their very distinctive style of music, which encompasses
odd time rhythms, sound dissonances and complex arrangements. They have performed
multiple works with a variety of other artists, including David Byrne, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman
, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Kevin Volans, Hector Zazou, Spiritualized, and Yellow Magic Orchestra.

They are the performers of the current arrangement of University Challenge's title music
on BBC2 in the UK.

They are currently signed to Music & Words. Their early albums were on Mute Records
and Argo Records (UK).

Thielemans started his career as a guitar player. In 1949 he joined a jam session in Paris
with Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach and others. In 1949 and 1950 he
participated in European tours with Benny Goodman, making his first record in Paris with
fellow band member, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims.[4] In 1951 he went on tour with Bobbejaan
Schoepen.
He moved to the US in 1952 where he was a member of Charlie Parker's All-Stars and
worked with Miles Davis and Dinah Washington. He played and recorded with Ella Fitzgerald,
Jaco Pastorius, Peggy Lee, The George Shearing Quintet, Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson,
Bill Evans, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, The Happenings, Astrud Gilberto, Shirley Horn, Elis
Regina and others.[5]
A jazz standard by Toots Thielemans is "Bluesette" where he used whistling and guitar in
unison. First recorded by Toots in 1962, with lyrics added by Norman Gimbel the song became
a major worldwide hit. His harmonica playing can also be heard in movie scores such as
Midnight Cowboy, Jean de Florette, Sugarland Express, The Yakuza, Turkish Delight,
The Getaway, French Kiss, Dunderklumpen, and in various TV programs, including
Sesame Street, the Belgian TV series Witse, and the Dutch TV series Baantjer.
He composed the music for the 1974 Swedish film Dunderklumpen! in which he also
voiced the animated character Pellegnillot.
His whistling and harmonica playing can be heard on Old Spice radio and TV
commercials that have been made over the years. During the 1980s he performed with
bassist and composer/bandleader Jaco Pastorius in ensembles ranging from duet to the
Word of Mouth Big Band.[6] In 1983 he contributed to Billy Joel's album An Innocent Man,
and his trademark harmonica can be heard on "Leave a Tender Moment Alone." A year
later, he appeared on the Julian Lennon song "Too Late For Goodbyes" from the album
Valotte. In 1984, he recorded the final album of Billy Eckstine (I Am A Singer), featuring
very beautiful ballads and standards arranged and conducted by Angelo DiPippo. In the
1990s Thielemans embarked on theme projects that included world music. In 1998 he
released a French flavoured album titled "Chez Toots" that included the Les Moulins De
Mon Coeur (The Windmills of Your Mind) featuring guest singer Johnny Mathis. Apart from
his popularity as an accomplished musician, he is well liked for his modesty and kind
demeanor. In his native Belgium, he is also popular for describing himself as a Brussels
"ket", which means "street kid" in old Brussels slang. He received a joint honorary doctorate
from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and in
2001 Thielemans was ennobled a baron by King Albert II of Belgium.
In 2005 he was nominated for the title of The Greatest Belgian. In the Flemish version he
ended 20th place, in the Walloon version he ended 44th place. In October 2008, he was
honored with the 2009 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship. On 23
January 2009, he joined Philip Catherine on stage at the Liberchies(Belgium) church in
memory of the 100th anniversary of Django Reinhardt's birth.
Influence

Thielemans may have had a significant impact on The Beatles, John Lennon in particular,
during the group's pre-fame formative years.[7][8][9] While performing in 1959 in Hamburg,
Lennon (sometimes with fellow Beatle George Harrison in tow) would often go over to the
club where Toots was performing (in a noontime residency) as a member of The George
Shearing Quintet. Lennon was evidently taken with Toots' harmonica playing and guitar
selection: an electric American made Rickenbacker with a short scale neck.
Based on the sound Lennon heard, he decided to purchase a natural alder wood
"alderglo" colored three pickup Rickenbacker 1958 model 325 Capri guitar with a
short scale as Harrison would recall to various interviewers many years later.
This guitar, often fondly referred to as the "Holy Grail" of all guitars, was customized and
tinkered with many times over the years by Lennon and re-painted to jetglo black: it was
the guitar he played on The Beatles first and third appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show
during February 1964).[citation needed] Lennon also adopted the chromatic harmonica,
which was used on the group's early recordings.

Marianne Evelyn Faithfull (born 29 December 1946) is an award-winning English singer, songwriter and actress whose career has spanned five decades.

Her early work in pop and rock music in the 1960s was overshadowed by her struggle with drug abuse in the 1970s. During the first two thirds of that decade, and with little notice, she produced only two studio albums. After a long commercial absence, she returned late in 1979 with the highly acclaimed landmark album, Broken English. Faithfull's subsequent solo work, often critically acclaimed, has at times been overshadowed by her personal history. On 31 January 2011, Faithfull released her 18th studio album, Horses and High Heels in mainland Europe. On 7 March 2011 it was released in the UK.

From 1966 to 1970, she had a highly-publicised romantic relationship with Rolling Stones' lead singer, Mick Jagger. She also co-wrote "Sister Morphine," which is featured on the Stones' Sticky Fingers album.

Early lifeFaithfull was born in Hampstead, London. Her father, Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, was a British military officer and college professor in psychology.[2] Her mother, Eva von Sacher-Masoch, Baroness Erisso, was originally from Vienna, with aristocratic roots in the Hapsburg Dynasty and Jewish ancestry on her maternal side.[3] Erisso was a ballerina for the Max Reinhardt Company during her early years, and danced in productions of works by the German theatrical duo Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.[4] Faithfull's maternal great great uncle was Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the 19th century Austrian nobleman whose erotic novel, Venus in Furs, spawned the word "masochism".[5] In regard to her roots in nobility, Faithfull commented in March 2007 prior to beginning the European leg of her tour, "I'm even going to Budapest, which is nice because I'm half English and half Austro Hungarian. I've inherited the title Baroness Sacher-Masoch—it comes from one of my great uncles who gave his name to masochism."[6]

The family originally lived in Ormskirk, a market town in West Lancashire, while her father completed a doctorate at Liverpool University.[2] She spent some of her early life at the commune formed by her father at Braziers Park, Oxfordshire. After her parents divorced when she was six years old,[2] she moved with her mother to Reading, Berkshire. Her elementary school was in Brixton. Living in rather reduced circumstances, Faithfull's girlhood was marred by bouts with tuberculosis and her charity boarder status at St Joseph's Convent School. While at St. Joseph's, she was also a member of the Progress Theatre's student group.

Music career and personal life 1960sFaithfull began her singing career in 1964, landing her first gigs as a folk music performer in coffeehouses.[7] Faithfull soon began taking part in London's exploding social scene. In early 1964 she attended a Rolling Stones launch party with John Dunbar and met Andrew Loog Oldham, who discovered her. Her first major release, "As Tears Go By", was penned by Jagger/Richards, and became a chart success. She then released a series of successful singles, including "This Little Bird", "Summer Nights" and "Come and Stay With Me".[7] Faithfull married artist John Dunbar on 6 May 1965 in Cambridge with Peter Asher as the best man.[2] The couple lived in a flat at 29 Lennox Gardens in Belgravia just off Knightsbridge, London SW1.[2] On 10 November 1965 she gave birth to their son, Nicholas.[2] She then "left her husband to live with Mick Jagger" and told the "New Musical Express": "My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend. I slept with three and decided the lead singer was the best bet."[2]

In 1966 she took their son to stay with Brian Jones and Anita Pallenberg in London. During that time period, Faithfull started smoking marijuana and became best friends with Pallenberg. She also began a much publicised relationship with Mick Jagger that same year. The couple became notorious and largely part of the hip Swinging London scene. She was found wearing only a fur rug by British police executing a drug search at Richards' house in West Wittering, Sussex. In an interview 27 years later with A.M. Homes for Details, Faithfull discussed her wilder days and admitted that the drug bust fur rug incident had ravaged her personal life: "It destroyed me. To be a male drug addict and to act like that is always enhancing and glamorising. A woman in that situation becomes a slut and a bad mother". In 1968 Faithfull, by now addicted to cocaine, miscarried a daughter (whom she had named Corrina) while retreating to Jagger's country house in Ireland.[7][8]

Faithfull's involvement in Jagger's life would be reflected in some of the Rolling Stones' best known songs. "Sympathy for the Devil", featured on the album Beggars Banquet (1968), was in part inspired by The Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bulgakov, a book which Faithfull introduced him to. The song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" on the Let It Bleed album (1969) was written about Faithfull; the songs "Wild Horses" and "I Got the Blues" on the 1971 album Sticky Fingers were also influenced by Faithfull, and she herself wrote "Sister Morphine". (The writing credit for the song was the subject of a protracted legal battle; the resolution of the case has Faithfull listed as co-author of the song.) In her autobiography, Faithfull said Jagger and Richards released it in their own names so that her agent did not collect all the royalties and proceeds from the song, especially as she was homeless and battling with heroin addiction at the time. Faithfull appeared in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus concert, giving a solo performance of "Something Better".[7]

1970sFaithfull ended her relationship with Jagger in May 1970, and she lost custody of her son in that same year, which led to her mother attempting suicide.[7] Faithfull's personal life went into decline, and her career went into a tailspin. She only made a few appearances, including a 1973 performance at NBC with David Bowie, singing Sonny Bono's song (recorded in 1965 by Sonny & Cher) "I Got You Babe".[7]

Faithfull lived on London's Soho streets for two years, suffering from heroin addiction and anorexia nervosa.[9] Friends intervened and enrolled her in an NHS drug programme, from which she could get her daily fix on prescription from a chemist (pharmacist).[10] She was one of the program's most notorious failures, neither controlling nor stabilising her addiction as the NHS intended. In 1971, producer Mike Leander found her on the streets and made an attempt to revive her career, producing part of her album Rich Kid Blues. The album would be shelved until 1985.[7]

Severe laryngitis coupled with persistent cocaine abuse during this period permanently altered the sound of Faithfull's voice, leaving it cracked and lower in pitch. While the new sound was praised as "whiskey soaked" by some critics, journalist John Jones of the London Sunday Times wrote that she had "permanently vulgarised her voice".[7] In 1975 she released the country-influenced record Dreamin' My Dreams, which reached #1 on the Irish Albums Chart.[7] Faithfull moved into a squat without hot water or electricity in Chelsea with then-boyfriend Ben Brierly, of the punk band The Vibrators. She later shared flats in Chelsea and Regents Park with Henrietta Moraes.

Faithfull's career returned full force in 1979 (the same year she was arrested for marijuana possession in Norway) with the album Broken English, one of her most critically hailed albums.[7] The album was partially influenced by the punk explosion and her marriage to Brierly in the same year. In addition to the punk-pop sounds of the title track (which addressed terrorism in Europe, being dedicated to Ulrike Meinhof), the album also included "Why D'Ya Do It", a punk-reggae song with aggressive lyrics adapted from a poem by Heathcote Williams.[11] The musical structure of this song is complex; though on the surface hard rock, it is a tango in 4/4 time, with an opening electric guitar riff by Barry Reynolds in which beats 1 and 4 of each measure are accented on the up-beat, and beat 3 is accented on the down beat. Faithfull, in her autobiography, commented that her fluid yet rhythmic reading of Williams' lyric was "an early form of rap".[7] Broken English also revealed a dramatic change to Faithfull's singing voice. The melodic vocals on her early records were replaced with a raucous, deep voice, affected by years of smoking, drinking and drug use.[7]

1980sFaithfull began living in New York after the release of the follow-up to Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, in 1981. Despite her comeback, she was still battling with addiction in the mid 1980s, at one point breaking her jaw tripping on a flight of stairs while under the influence.[7] In another incident her heart actually stopped. A disastrous appearance on Saturday Night Live was blamed on too many rehearsals, but it was suspected that drugs had caused her vocal cords to seize up. Rich Kid Blues (1984) was another collection of her early work combined with new recordings, a double record showcasing both the pop and rock 'n' roll facets of her output to date. In 1985, Faithfull performed "Ballad of the Soldier's Wife" on Hal Willner's tribute album Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill. Faithfull's restrained readings lent themselves to the material, and this collaboration informed several subsequent works.

In 1985, she was at the Hazelden Foundation Clinic in Minnesota for rehabilitation. She then received treatment at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. While living at a hotel in nearby Cambridge, Faithfull started an affair (while still married to Brierly) with a dual diagnosis (mentally ill and drug dependent) man, Howard Tose, who later committed suicide by jumping from a 14th floor window of the apartment they shared.[7] In 1987, Faithfull dedicated a thank-you to Tose within the album package of Strange Weather, on the back sleeve: "To Howard Tose with love and thanks". Faithfull's divorce from Brierly was also finalised that year. In 1995, she wrote and sang about Tose's death in "Flaming September" from the album A Secret Life.[7]

In 1987, Faithfull again reinvented herself, this time as a jazz and blues singer, on Strange Weather, also produced by Willner. The album became her most critically lauded album of the decade. Coming full circle, the renewed Faithfull cut another recording of "As Tears Go By" for Strange Weather, this time in a tighter, more gravelly voice. The singer confessed to a lingering irritation with her first hit. "I always childishly thought that was where my problems started, with that damn song," she told Jay Cocks in Time, but she came to terms with it as well as with her past. In a 1987 interview with Rory O'Connor of Vogue, Faithfull declared, "forty is the age to sing it, not seventeen.[8] The album of covers was produced by Hal Willner after the two had spent numerous weekends listening to hundreds of songs from the annals of twentieth century music. They chose to record such diverse tracks as Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It with Mine" and "Yesterday", written by Broadway composers Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach. The work also includes tunes first made notable by such blues luminaries as Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith; Tom Waits penned the title track. In 1988, the singer married writer and actor Giorgio Della Terza, but they divorced in 1991.[7]

1990sWhen Roger Waters assembled an all-star cast of musicians to perform the rock opera The Wall live in Berlin in July 1990, Faithfull played the part of Pink's overprotective mother. Her musical career rebounded for the third time during the early 1990s with the live album Blazing Away, which featured Faithfull revisiting songs she had performed over the course of her career. Blazing Away was recorded at St. Anne's Cathedral in Brooklyn. The 13 selections include "Sister Morphine", a cover of Edith Piaf's "Les Prisons du Roy", and "Why D'Ya Do It?" from Broken English. Alanna Nash of Stereo Review commended the musicians whom Faithfull had chosen to back her—longtime guitarist Reynolds was joined by former Band member Garth Hudson and pianist Dr. John. Nash was also impressed with the album's autobiographical tone, noting "Faithfull's gritty alto is a cracked and halting rasp, the voice of a woman who's been to hell and back on the excursion fare which, of course, she has." The reviewer extolled Faithfull as "one of the most challenging and artful of women artists," and Rolling Stone writer Fred Goodman asserted: "Blazing Away is a fine retrospective — proof that we can still expect great things from this graying, jaded contessa."[8]

A Collection of Her Best Recordings was released in 1994 by Island Records to coincide with the release of the Faithfull autobiography; the two products originally shared the same cover art. It contained Faithfull's updated version of "As Tears Go By" from Strange Weather several cuts from Broken English and A Child's Adventure and a song written by Patti Smith scheduled for inclusion on an Irish AIDS benefit album. This track, "Ghost Dance", suggested to Faithfull by a friend who later died of AIDS, was made with a trio of old acquaintances: Stones drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Ron Wood backed Faithfull's vocals on the song, while Richards coproduced it. The retrospective album also featured one live track, "Times Square", from Blazing Away as well as a new Faithfull original, "She", penned with composer and arranger Angelo Badalamenti to be released the following year on A Secret Life, with additional songs co written with Badalamenti. Faithfull also sang background vocals on Metallica's song "The Memory Remains" from their 1997 album ReLoad and appeared in the song's music video; the track reached #28 in the U.S. (#3 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart) and #13 in the UK.

As her fascination with the music of Weimar-era Germany continued, Faithfull performed in The Threepenny Opera at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, playing Pirate Jenny. Her interpretation of the music led to a new album, Twentieth Century Blues (1996), which focused on the music of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, followed in 1998 by a recording of The Seven Deadly Sins, with the Vienna Radio Symphony, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. A hugely successful concert and cabaret tour accompanied by Paul Trueblood at the piano, culminated in the filming, at the Montreal Jazz Festival, of the DVD Marianne Faithfull Sings Kurt Weill.

In 1998 Faithfull released A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology, a two-disc compilation that chronicled her years with Island Records. It featured tracks from her albums Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, A Child's Adventure, Strange Weather, Blazing Away, and A Secret Life, as well as several B sides and unreleased tracks.

Faithfull's 1999 DVD Dreaming My Dreams contained material about her childhood and parents, with historical video footage going back to 1964 and interviews with the artist and several friends who have known her since childhood. The documentary included sections on her relationship with John Dunbar and Mick Jagger, and brief interviews with Keith Richards. It concluded with footage from a 30-minute live concert, originally broadcast on PBS for the series Sessions at West 54th. That same year, she ranked 25th in VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll.

2000sFaithfull has released several albums in the 2000s that received positive critical response, beginning with Vagabond Ways (1999), which was produced and recorded by Mark Howard. It included collaborations with Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, and writer (and friend) Frank McGuinness. Later that year she sang "Love Got Lost" on Joe Jackson's Night and Day II.

Her renaissance continued with Kissin' Time, released in 2002. The album contained songs written with Blur, Beck, Billy Corgan, Jarvis Cocker, Dave Stewart, David Courts, and the French pop singer Étienne Daho. On this record, she paid tribute to Nico (with "Song for Nico"), whose work she admired. The album also included an autobiographical song she co-wrote with Cocker, called "Sliding Through Life on Charm".

In 2005, she released Before the Poison. The album was primarily a collaboration with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, though Damon Albarn and Jon Brion also contributed. In 2005 she recorded (and co-produced) "Lola R Forever", a cover of the Serge Gainsbourg song "Lola Rastaquouere" with Sly & Robbie for the tribute album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. In 2007, Faithfull collaborated with the British singer/songwriter, Patrick Wolf on the duet "Magpie" from his third album The Magic Position and wrote and recorded a new song for the French film Truands called "A Lean and Hungry Look" with Ulysse.

In March 2007 she returned to the stage with a touring show entitled Songs of Innocence and Experience. Supported by a trio, the performance had a semi-acoustic feel and toured European theatres throughout the spring and summer. The show featured many songs she had not performed live before including "Something Better", the song she sang on The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. The show also included the Harry Nilsson song "Don't Forget Me", "Marathon Kiss" from Vagabond Ways and a version of the traditional "Spike Driver Blues".

Recent articles hint Faithfull is looking to retirement, in hopes money from Songs of the Innocence and Experience will enable her to live in comfort. The 60-year-old said: "I’m not prepared to be 70 and absolutely broke. I realised last year that I have no safety net at all and I’m going to have to get one. So I need to change my attitude to life, which means I have to put away 10 per cent every year of my old age. I want to be in a position where I don’t have to work. I should have thought about this a long time ago but I didn’t."[12] Recording of her studio album Easy Come, Easy Go commenced in New York City on 6 December 2007; the album is produced by Hal Willner who also produced her 1987 album Strange Weather. A version of Morrissey's "Dear God Please Help Me" from his 2006 album, Ringleader of the Tormentors is one of the songs featured, and the album is available both as 10-song cd and 18-song cd-dvd combination. A collectible vinyl pressing is also available. The EU release on Naive was 10 November 2008.The US, UK and Australian release dates for Marianne's new album are ..US release: 17 March 2009 on Decca, UK release: 16 March 2009 on Dramatico, Australian release: 14 February 2009 on Shock records.[13] On 31 March 2009, Faithfull performed "The Crane Wife 3" on The Late Show.[14] In late March, she began the Easy Come, Easy Go tour, which took her to France, Germany, Austria, New York City, Los Angeles and London.[15]

On 16 April 2009, while preparing to board a British Airways flight at London's Gatwick Airport bound for a concert appearance in Bologna, François Ravard, accompanying Faithfull, was detained and then later arrested. In a statement, British Airways said: "A male customer became aggressive and abusive at check-in when he was refused travel on a flight from Gatwick to Bologna. He appeared to be intoxicated on arrival at check-in. In such circumstances, an assessment is made as to whether the passenger is fit to travel. When he was refused travel, he became physically and verbally abusive. Police were called and he was arrested. Such behaviour will not be tolerated."[16]

Faithfull, however, had not been drinking and was allowed to board. The pair were flying to Italy on a leg of her world tour promoting Easy Come, Easy Go. According to her spokesperson, "Marianne was at Gatwick airport but was not involved in any way in the situation that occurred and she managed to travel on to Bologna as planned. Her gig tonight there will go ahead as planned, and Francois travelled from Britain to join her yesterday. Marianne hadn't been drinking at the time of the incident and she does not drink alcohol. She is enjoying life and loving it as she is sober and clean."[16]

On 18 April 2009, Faithfull revealed separately in an interview, reported in The Daily Mail, that although Ravard was still her manager, their 15-year relationship had ended some months ago. Faithfull stated, "I'm all right but I have had a bit of an adventure - my relationship broke up. I felt very betrayed and lonely. I am much, much better now, but it is not good for your self-esteem."[17] On 3 May 2009, she was featured on CBS News Sunday Morning and interviewed by Anthony Mason in the "Sunday Profile" segment. Both in-studio and on-the-street (New York City) interview segments with Faithfull and Mason were interspersed with extensive biographical and musical footage.[18] In 2010, she was honoured with the Icon of the Year award from Q magazine.

On 13 November 2009, Faithfull was interviewed by Jennifer Davies[19] on World Radio Switzerland, where she described the challenges of being stereotyped as a "mother, or the pure wife". Because of this, she insisted, it has been hard to maintain a long career as a female artist, which, she said, gave her empathy for Amy Winehouse when they met recently. In the interview,[20] Faithfull also said that she hoped to find love soon.

2010sOn 31 January 2011, Faithfull released her 18th studio album Horses and High Heels in mainland Europe. The 13 track album contains four songs co-written by Faithfull, the rest are covers of mainly well known songs such as Dusty Springfield's "Goin' Back" and the Shangri-las "Past, Present, Future". A UK CD release is planned for 7 March 2011. Faithfull will support the album's release with an extensive European tour, arriving in the UK on 24 May for a rare show at London's Barbican Centre, with an extra UK show at Leamington Spa on 26 May. TV and media interviews are also planned as part of the promotion.

Acting careerIn addition to her music career, Faithfull has had a career as an actress in theatre, television and film.

Her first professional theatre appearance was in a 1967 stage adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters, at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in which she played Irina, co-starring with Glenda Jackson and Avril Elgar. Before that she played herself in Jean-Luc Godard's movie Made in U.S.A.. Faithfull has also appeared in the 1967 film I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name alongside Orson Welles (where she notedly became the first person to say "fuck" in a mainstream studio picture), in the French television movie Anna, starring Anna Karina (in which Faithfull sang Serge Gainsbourg's "Hier ou Demain"), as a leather-clad motorcyclist in the 1968 French film La Motocyclette (English titles: Girl on a Motorcycle and Naked Under Leather) opposite Alain Delon, and in Kenneth Anger's 1969 film Lucifer Rising, in which she played Lilith. In 1969, Faithfull played Ophelia opposite Nicol Williamson's title character in Hamlet, directed by Tony Richardson and featuring Anthony Hopkins as Claudius.

Her stage work also included Edward Bond's Early Morning at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in which she played a lesbian Florence Nightingale, The Collector at St. Martin's Theatre in the West End opposite Simon Williams, Mad Dog at Hampstead Theatre opposite Denholm Elliott, A Patriot for Me by John Osborne, at Watford Palace Theatre and the role of Lizzie Curry in N. Richard Nash's The Rainmaker, which toured the UK and in which Faithfull's co-star was Peter Gilmore. Other film roles in the 1970s included Sophy Kwykwer in Stephen Weeks's Ghost Story (AKA Madhouse Mansion), released on a newly-mastered DVD in the UK in 2009, and Helen Rochefort in Assault on Agathon.

Her television acting in the late 1960s and early 1970s included The Door of Opportunity (1970) with Ian Ogilvy,[21] adapted from W. Somerset Maugham's story, followed by August Strindberg's The Stronger (1971) with Britt Ekland,[22] and Terrible Jim Fitch (1971) by James Leo Herlihy, which once more paired Faithfull with Nicol Williamson.[23]

In 1993, she played the role of Pirate Jenny in The Threepenny Opera at the Gate Theatre in Dublin. Later she performed Kurt Weill's "The Seven Deadly Sins" with the Vienna Radio Symphony, a CD of which was released in 1998.

She has played both God and the Devil. She appeared as God in two guest appearances in the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous opposite friend Jennifer Saunders, with another close friend, Anita Pallenberg, playing the Devil. In 2004 and 2005, she played the Devil in William Burroughs' and Tom Waits' musical, The Black Rider, directed by Robert Wilson, which opened at London's Barbican Theatre, toured to San Francisco, but from which she was forced to withdraw prior to performances at the Sydney Festival, owing to exhaustion.

In 2001 Faithfull appeared with Lucy Russell and Lambert Wilson in C.S. Leigh's Far From China. She has also appeared in Patrice Chéreau's Intimacy (2001) and, in 2004, in Jose Hayot's Nord-Plage. Faithfull appeared as Empress Maria Theresa in Sofia Coppola's 2006 biopic, Marie Antoinette. She starred in the film Irina Palm, released at the Berlinale film festival in 2007. Faithfull plays the central role of Maggie, a 60-year-old widow who becomes a sex worker to pay for medical treatment for her ill grandson.[24]

Faithfull lent her voice to the 2008 film Evil Calls: The Raven, although this was recorded several years earlier when the project was still titled Alone in the Dark. She has appeared in the 2008 feature documentary by Nik Sheehan on Brion Gysin and the dreamachine, entitled FLicKeR.[25]

In October 2008, Faithfull's website and MySpace page announced her tour of readings of Shakespeare's Sonnets, drawing on the "Dark Lady" sequence. Her accompanist on the tour is the cellist Vincent Segal.[26]

In 2011 and 2012 will appear on screen again playing supporting roles in the movies Faces in The Crowd and Belle Du Seigneur.

CollaborationsDuring her long recording career, Faithfull continually reinvented her musical persona, experimenting in different musical genres and collaborating with such varied artists as Damon Albarn, Angelo Badalamenti, The Beatles, Beck, David Bowie, Nick Cave, The Chieftains, Jarvis Cocker, Billy Corgan, Marcella Detroit, Emmylou Harris, PJ Harvey, Antony Hegarty, Rupert Hine, Joe Jackson, Alex James, Lenny Kaye, Daniel Lanois, Sean Lennon, Ismaël Lô, Metallica, John Prine, Barry Reynolds, Keith Richards, Sly and Robbie, Teddy Thompson, Tom Waits, Rufus Wainwright, Roger Waters, Steve Winwood, Patrick Wolf and Ryan Adams.

Career as a diaristIn 1994, she published an autobiography, entitled Faithfull,[7] in which she discusses her early life, career, drug addictions, experimentation with bisexuality and significant relationships with her parents, the various Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

In 2007, Faithfull released a second volume of autobiography called Memories, Dreams and Reflections.[4] The book, published by Fourth Estate (an imprint of HarperCollins), was a more personal history than Faithfull and contains a wide range of material, including a detailed early history of her mother's life in Austria, her recollections of friends who have died, and her assessments of various recent health issues.

Nominations and awards

Faithfull at the Women's World Awards, Vienna 2009On 4 November 2007, the European Film Academy announced that Faithfull had received a nomination for Best Actress, for her role as Maggie in Irina Palm. At the 20th annual European Film Awards ceremony held in Berlin, on 1 December 2007, Faithfull lost to Helen Mirren.

On 5 March 2009, Faithfull received the World Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2009 Women's World Awards. "Marianne’s contribution to the arts over a 45 year career including 18 studio albums as a singer, songwriter and interpreter, and numerous appearances on stage and screen is now being acknowledged with this special award."[13] The award was presented in Vienna, with ceremonies televised in over 40 countries on 8 March 2009 as part of International Women's Day.[13]

On March 23rd 2011 Marianne has been awarded the Commandeur of L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France's highest cultural honours.

HealthIn the past five years, Faithfull's touring and work schedule has been interrupted four times due to various health issues: In late 2004 she called off the European leg of a world tour, promoting Before The Poison after collapsing onstage in Milan, and was hospitalised for exhaustion. The tour resumed later and included a US leg in 2005. In September 2006, she again called off a concert tour, this time after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.[27][28] The following month, she underwent surgery in France and no further treatment was necessary owing to the tumour having been caught at a very early stage. Less than two months after she declared having beaten the disease, Faithfull made her public statement of full recovery.[29]

On 11 October 2007 Faithfull revealed she suffered from hepatitis C on the UK television programme This Morning, and that she had first been diagnosed with the condition 12 years before. She discusses both the cancer and hepatitis diagnoses in further depth in her second memoir, Memories, Dreams and Reflections.[4] On 27 May 2008, Faithfull released the following blog posting on her MySpace page, with the headline "Tour Dates Cancelled" and credited to FR Management - the company operated by her boyfriend/manager François Ravard: "Due to general mental, physical and nervous exhaustion doctors have ordered Marianne Faithfull to immediately cease all work activities and rehabilitate. The treatment and recovery should last around 6 months."[26]

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a double concept album recorded and released in 1974 by the British rock band Genesis. It was their sixth studio album and the last album by the group to feature the involvement of lead singer Peter Gabriel.

Premise

The album tells the surreal story of a half Puerto Rican juvenile delinquent named Rael living in New York City, who is swept underground to face bizarre creatures and nightmarish dangers in order to rescue his brother John.^[1] Several of the story's occurrences and places were derived from Peter Gabriel's dreams^{[citation needed]}, and the protagonist's name is a play on his surname.^{[citation needed]} In an interview Phil Collins remarked, "It's about a 'split personality'^{[citation needed]}. In this context, Rael would believe he is looking for John but is actually looking for a missing part of himself. The individual songs also make satirical allusions to everything from mythology to the sexual revolution to advertising and consumerism. The title track, as well as "The Carpet Crawlers" and "In the Cage", are live favourites for the band. Both "In the Cage" and "The Carpet Crawlers" were included in 2007's Turn it On Again: The Tour, with "The Carpet Crawlers" played as the closing number.

Background

Gabriel was absent from the album's writing and rehearsal sessions due to personal problems – his first wife was having difficulties with her first pregnancy.^[2] For this reason, most of the music was written by band members Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford, with some contribution from Steve Hackett and, at first, virtually none from Gabriel. Gabriel, for his part, insisted on writing the story and all the lyrics himself, which caused friction, in particular because Rutherford had originally suggested another project for the band – an album based on Antoine de Saint Exupéry's The Little Prince. In the event, Banks and Rutherford did write the words for "The Light Dies Down on Broadway", as Gabriel could not come up with a linking piece between "Ravine" and "Riding the Scree". In addition, when Gabriel put lyrics to a piece of music written by one of the other band members (such as Banks' "The Lamia" and Hackett's "Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist") the composer would often insist on adjusting the lyrics slightly to better fit the music, an action Gabriel did not take kindly to.^{[citation needed]}

Gabriel's then-wife Jill pointed out in Spencer Bright's Peter Gabriel: An Authorized Biography that he wrote the main melody for "The Carpet Crawlers", of which he is especially proud.^[3] Tracks like "Anyway" and "Lilywhite Lilith" and "Colony of Slippermen" were developed from earlier unused 1969 compositions by the band ("Frustration" and "The Light" respectively) which were likely to have been group efforts, which Gabriel had played some part in creating.^{[citation needed]}

During the album's pre-production, Gabriel was contacted by filmmaker William Friedkin, (at the time enjoying success with The Exorcist), about a possible film project after Friedkin read Gabriel's short story on the sleeve of the Genesis Live album.^[1] Despite his bandmates' disapproval, Gabriel left them to work on some early script drafts. However, the project came to nothing (Friedkin instead working with Tangerine Dream to score his next film, Sorcerer), and Gabriel returned to the band.

Live performance

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway met with mixed reviews, and reached number 10 in the UK, while nearly cracking the U.S. Top 40, reaching number 41 and eventually going Gold. The band went on a world tour upon its release, performing the album in its entirety 102 times. The Lamb Tour was slated to begin on 29 October 1974, but due to an injury to Steve Hackett's hand, the tour was postponed until 12 November.^[3] Opening night for the tour commenced at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois on 20 November 1974. The final show on The Lamb tour was 27 May 1975, at the Palais des Sports in Paris, France. Early into the tour, Gabriel decided he would leave Genesis, although he would finish the tour amicably with the band and not go public until August 1975.

The tour saw the summation of Peter Gabriel's interest in theatrical presentation, masks and costumes, which had initially been something to hide his shy persona behind and to give the band a distinctiveness. In addition to Gabriel's theatrics, three screens above the band showed slides to accompany the story.

Gabriel showed restraint for the first half of the show, dressed as Rael in leather jacket, T-shirt and jeans, while relying on effective lighting and dramatic expression without the use of props or costumes. During the second half, however, the costumes and other visuals became much more elaborate. During "The Lamia", for instance, Gabriel was surrounded by a spinning cone-like structure decorated with images of snakes. For the last verse of the song, the cone would collapse to reveal Gabriel wearing a body suit that glowed under the stage's black lights. However, the most notorious of Gabriel's costumes was the Slipperman, a naked monster with inflatable genitalia and covered in lumps, who emerged onto the stage by crawling out of a phallus-shaped tube. At the intro to the final song "It," a huge explosion set off twin strobes, and the audience was faced with both Gabriel and a dummy dressed identically, clueless as to which was real. "It" also featured an alternate ending with Gabriel vanishing from the stage in a flash of light and a poof of smoke.

Although these visuals were, as in past concerts, meant to enhance the experience, the rest of the band became frustrated with the press focusing only on the theatrical side of the show and not the musicianship. Another problem for the band was that many fans reacted as if Gabriel was the star and the rest of the group merely his backing band. Collins stated in Hugh Fielder's 1984 book, The Book Of Genesis, that backstage after a Lamb concert, "people would steam straight past Tony, Mike, Steve and I, go straight up to Peter and say, 'You're fantastic, we really enjoyed the show.' It was becoming a one-man show to the audience."

The show would feature some of the band's most famous instruments, including Mike Rutherford's double neck that consisted of a MicroFret six string bass and a Rickenbacker 12 string guitar, and Phil Collins' largest drum kit with Genesis featuring four timbales, a red seven-piece Ludwig kit (and later a natural finish Premier kit in same configuration,) a Fibes Crystallite snare, a set of five red temple blocks, a vibraphone, a set of orchestral bells, tubular bells, and a set of tuned tambourines (which can be heard on "In the Cage.")

Aside from the band's frustration at the amount of attention given to Gabriel, the tour was fraught with other difficulties. According to Tony Banks, the slides which accompanied the music never worked well and only came close to working perfectly on four or five occasions. Gabriel often had difficulty getting a microphone near enough to his mouth to be heard in some of his costumes, especially the Slipperman. And, during a performance of "It" in one concert in Oslo, a stage manager's error resulted in an explosion so intense that it caused the band to stop playing, fearing for their safety. Still, the concerts were not without some enjoyable surprises: at the final Lamb concert in Besançon, roadie Geoff Banks, just for a joke and without telling the band beforehand, put on the dummy's leather jacket and – wearing nothing else – replaced the Gabriel dummy on stage for the intro to "It." (citation needed)

Genesis never had any of their Lamb concerts filmed in their entirety, although several pieces from the show were filmed, including some bootleg footage taken by audience members. The 5.1 DVD edition of The Lamb, released in November 2008, features a visual "reconstruction" of the concert, utilising all of the band's original slides from the show, some bootleg footage, and photographs. There is also a nearly-complete audio recording of their Lamb performance from 24 January 1975 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles that is available on their box set, Genesis Archive 1967–75, although it has some re-recorded vocals and guitar parts by Gabriel and Hackett, as both men were dissatisfied with their performances on the original concert recording (as well as technical flaws; e.g. Gabriel's vocals at one point being inevitably muffled by the Slipperman costume). Also, the tape ran out during the performance of "It," so a remastered version of the studio original with a new lead vocal by Gabriel is substituted.

In 2004, Genesis considered reuniting for a brief reunion tour of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." All five former band members met in November 2004 to discuss the possible "Lamb" tour, but ultimately Gabriel bowed out due to his solo commitments. In 2007, Banks, Collins and Rutherford went ahead with the Genesis reunion tour without Gabriel and Hackett, playing only a couple of "Lamb" songs during the show, the standard live numbers "In the Cage" and "Carpet Crawlers." However, the trio had all stated that they still hope a reunion tour of "The Lamb" with Gabriel and Hackett would still happen at some point, but it all depends on Gabriel's availability and commitment.^{[citation needed]}

Reception

In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #14 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".^[5]

The album came 9th in Uncut's "10 best concept albums", where it was described as an "impressionistic, intense album" and "pure theatre (in a good way) and still Gabriel's best work".^[6]

Reissues

A digitally remastered version of "The Lamb" was released on CD in 1994 on Virgin in Europe and on Atlantic in the US and Canada. The remastered CD's booklet features the lyrics and story that came with the original vinyl, though some of the inner sleeve artwork was not reproduced.

A re-recorded version of the song "The Carpet Crawlers," titled "The Carpet Crawlers 1999", was released on the compilation album Turn It on Again: The Hits, with both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins contributing lead vocals.

A SACD / DVD double disc set (including new 5.1 and Stereo mixes) was released in November 2008.

Doble LP de Genesis editado a finales de 1974. Aunque para los fans de este grupo es uno de sus mejores trabajos, para otros (incluyendo a los propios miembros de la banda) es un trabajo que podría haberse mejorado considerablemente por lo apresurado de su composición y grabación.

En aquel tiempo Peter Gabriel tenia un particular corte de cabello. Tenía un espacio afeitado que, según el, significaba una facilidad para contactarse con Rael (ver más abajo). Así se le puede observar en algunos videos y fotos.

La letra fue escrita por Peter Gabriel mientras que parte la musical corre a cargo del resto del grupo. Esto causó que éstos últimos no se sintieran demasiado cómodos (solo una canción, "The Light Dies Down on Broadway, sería escrita por Tony Banks). Esto resultaría en problemas y tensiones en el grupo desde la misma grabación del doble vinilo y especialmente en la gira de presentación del mismo lo que terminaría con el abandono definitivo de Peter Gabriel, aunque él lo atribuye a motivos personales. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, muestra un trabajo progresivo complejo y con un deseo de conquistar América de una vez.

El álbum es un disco doble conceptual, la historia aparece en formato prosa en el forro del disco, complementa y simplifica el entendimiento de las líricas del álbum. Es una historia compleja, con múltiples escenarios e historias, todas relacionadas a Rael, un inmigrante puertorriqueño que intenta hacerse un nombre en las calles de Nueva York. Es partícipe de un viaje extraño al rescate de su hermano John, como de película de ciencia ficción, en la cual debe sufrir una serie de experiencias que lo ayudarán a trascender la experiencia terrenal y resurgir como un nuevo ser "It". Como ni las líricas ni la historia escrita en la carátula son muy claras, las interpretaciones del disco serán múltiples. Baste decir que es exactamente esto lo que lo hace una obra superior, o, para algunos, una obra maestra del Rock Progresivo de todos los tiempos, para otros, uno de los trabajos más ambiciosos de la era del Rock Progresivo y que también marca los últimos buenos años del Rock Progresivo, ya que poco después llegaría el Punk y el Glam a destronarlo.

Curiosamente, mucho del álbum contiene elementos proto-Punk o proto-Glam, la puesta en escena de Gabriel, la cual se valía de diferentes y vistosos disfraces sería después muy común con el Glam Rock. Mientras que Rael (su personaje en escena) vestía chaquetas de cuero. Back in N.Y.C., es considerada una canción proto-punk.

Historia

Tras Selling England By The Pound, la banda se puso a trabajar en su siguiente proyecto. Una de las principales ideas era la de adaptar El Principito de Antoine de Saint Exupéry en un álbum conceptual, propuesto por Mike Rutherford. Sin embargo, Peter Gabriel propuso el argumento de The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway; inspirado, según el propio Gabriel, en El Topo de Alejandro Jodorowsky.^[1] Peter insistió en escribir todas las letras y el argumento del álbum mientras que la banda se encargaba de la parte musical. Esto originó fricciones entre los miembros de la banda. Steve Hackett estaba especialmente descontento por la poca aceptación que tenían sus ideas y por su escasa participación.

Paralelamente a esto, William Friedkin, director de El Exorcista, contactó con Gabriel para pedirle su colaboración en su siguiente proyecto cinematográfico, impresionado por el relato impreso en la carátula del álbum Genesis Live. Esto no hizo sino aumentar las fricciones dentro del grupo. Además, empujó a que el resto de los integrantes tuvieran que crear piezas instrumentales de puente entre canciones por falta de material; como The Waiting Room. Finalmente, Friedkin dejó el proyecto porque no se quería sentir como causante de la separación de la banda.

Cuando la banda comenzó con lar representaciones en vivo, el álbum no había sido publicado aún lo que originaba el desconcierto de algunos fans que no eran capaces de seguir la historia (el álbum venía acompañado con un relato escrito por Gabriel para ayudar a comprender mejor las letras de las canciones). Peter Gabriel solucionó esto con pequeñas intervenciones habladas entre algunas canciones.

Aunque Gabriel había decidido abandonar la banda antes de la gira, decidió no hacerlo público hasta acabar la misma. La rapidez con la que fue preparada hizo que se produjeran algunos fallos técnicos (como errores en el uso de los materiales pirotécnicos -que en cierta ocasión llegaron a causar que la banda dejase de tocar-). Por ese motivo, Genesis denegó a que se grabara. Tan solo existen algunas imágenes retransmitidas por la televisión italiana. La banda canadiense tributo The Musical Box se basó en el poco material existente y en entrevistas con los propios miembros de la banda para realizar una serie de representaciones fieles a la original entre los años 2004 y 2007.

Argumento

Rael, un inmigrante puertorriqueño, vagabundea por Nueva York al pie de los fastuosos edificios y los flamantes neones de Broadway. Al romper el alba, una nube negra desciende de los cielos sobre Times Square y comienza a absorberlo todo. Rael no puede escapar a su fuerza y acaba por ser tragado por ella.

Al despertar, se encuentra dentro de una especie de cápsula. A pesar de no saber dónde se encuentra, Rael está tranquilo y apacible; se vuelve a dormir despreocupadamente. Al despertar de nuevo, Rael descubre que la cápsula ha desaparecido; ahora, él se encuentra en una gruta donde las estalactitas se forman, se destruyen y se mueven a ojos vista. Rael comienza a caminar pero queda atrapado entre unas estalactitas que se han formado y movido a su alrededor, formando una especie de jaula. Aprisionado por las rocas, observa a alguien en el exterior de la misma: su hermano, John. Rael le pide auxilio pero John le abandona. Finalmente, las rocas se disuelven y Rael cae al suelo desvanecido por el dolor y la emoción.

Cuando se recupera, Rael llega a una especie de galería de una factoría donde observa muñecos con forma humana con números en la frente. Sorprendentemente, encuentra muñecos con el rostro de sus conocidos, e incluso, con el rosto de John y de él mismo. Rael siente miedo y comienza a recordar su pasado en NY: sus días con los chicos de la banda, su paso por el reformatorio de Pontiac, su primer encuentro amoroso, su pérdida de la inocencia (que Rael representa en su mente como una mano que afeita su corazón peludo)... Tras la galería, Rael accede a otra galería cubierta por alfombras y repleta de seres extraños. En un extremo, frente a una gran puerta (por la que se accede a una sala con mesa con un festín de comida y una escalera de caracol) se encuentra un conjunto de personas moviéndose lentamente de rodillas en el suelo. Rael trata de hablar con ellos y razonar por qué no se levantan y acceden a la otra sala; sin embargo, no consigue obtener ninguna respuesta coherente. Rael abandona la galería, atraviesa la sala del festín y sube por la escalera de caracol. Al final de la escalera se encuentra una estancia con forma semiesférica con 32 puertas. La estancia está llena de grupos de personas que hablan en voz bien alta: un sacerdote, un hechicero, un campesino... Todos ellos opinan sobre qué hacer, dónde ir, qué puerta atravesar... pero nadie sabe nada. La única persona que le puede ayudar es una anciana, una lilit ciega, que le puede llevar por las puertas guiada por las brisas.

Rael se adentra en una de las 32 puertas con su guía pero, una vez en la oscuridad de la caverna, ella lo abandona. Rael se queda sentado, asustado. Entonces llega una luz cegadora por un extremo de la gruta y se produce un desprendimiento. Rael queda atrapado inconsciente. En su delirio, cree haber muerto y estar en presencia de la mismísima muerte. Sin embargo, cuando Rael vuelve en sí, descubre que todo era una alucinación y consigue zafarse de lar rocas que le aprisionaban.

El desprendimiento de rocas ha abierto el camino a una estancia bañada por suaves aromas en la que se encuentra una piscina de agua rosácea. Rael se desnuda y se adentra en las aguas. Entonces aparecen en la piscina tres lamia, tres reptiles con pechos y rostro de mujer. Rael es seducido por ellas y deja que muerdan su carne y beban su sangre. Cuando esto ocurre, ellas se convulsionan y mueren. Rael, que había quedado enamorado de ellas, en una muestra de entrega y amor, devora los cadáveres de sus tres amantes y abandona la piscina.

Tras una caminata, Rael llega a un poblado lleno de seres deformes que le dan la bienvenida (entre ellos, descubre, a pesar de la deformidad de su rostro, a su hermano, John). Ellos le cuentan cómo las tres lamia se les aparecieron a todos ellos y cómo todos tuvieron el mismo encuentro amoroso con ellas y cómo cada día se regeneran para atrapar a otro incauto. Tras ello, a Rael no le queda más alternativa que esperar su destino: transformarse en un ser deforme como ellos, dominado por el abandono al placer de los sentidos. Sin embargo, Rael no se resigna y visita junto con su hermano John al "Doktor Dyper". El doctor les dice que la única manera de solucionar su situación es acabar con la fuente del placer y del dominio de los sentidos: extirpar el órgano reproductor. A pesar de ser una medida extrema, Rael y John acceden y tras ello, el doctor les devuelve sus órganos dentro de un tubo de plástico amarillo.

Cuando parece que todo está solucionado, una gran ave negra aparece y arrebata a Rael el tubo. Rael pide ayuda a su hermano para capturar al ave pero John dice que es un mal presagio y que él no le ayudará. Rael va tras el ave pero justo cuando le va a atrapar, el ave tira el tubo a un torrente de agua. Justo en ese momento, Rael ve que aparece en el cielo un vórtice, una especie de ventana por al que puede regresar al mundo real, a Nueva York. Pero entonces ve que su hermano John ha caído al mismo torrente de agua al que el ave había arrojado el tubo amarillo.

A pesar de que su hermano le ha abandonado varias veces, Rael salta a salvarle. Mientras tanto, la ventana se desvanece, desapareciendo así sus oportunidades de regresar a casa. Finalmente, Rael rescata a John y lo arrastra hasta la orilla. Pero entonces, Rael descubre con sorpresa que su hermano John no es su hermano... es Rael... tiene su mismo rostro. Entonces una nube púrpura los envuelve y ambos entes se disuelven en un resplandor amarillo.

En las ediciones originales de Cassette y LP, el primer lado corresponde a las canciones 1-6, mientras que el segundo corrsponde a las 7-12.

Diseño

El diseño del álbum fue llevado a cabo por el estudio inglés Hipgnosis (el estudio de diseño fundado por Storm Thorgerson), encargado del diseño de álbumes de otros grupos como Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Alan Parsons Project y, más notablemente, Pink Floyd. Se trata de la primera colaboración entre este estudio y la banda Genesis (tras esta, vendrían A Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering y And Then There Were Three).

En la portada y contraportada se representan distintas imágenes que muestran la historia del personaje principal del álbum. En los créditos, el modelo fotografiado aparece simplemente como "Omar".

En 1994, se publicó una versión remasterizada digitalmente. En el libreto del CD, aparecieron las letras y el relato publicados con el vinilo original, aunque algunas partes de los diseños de las cubiertas interiores fueron suprimidas.
